Drinking

Not all young male New Zealanders act the way they did in the film, this can be a stereotype of some people out in the world, not all people drink to the point they are so intoxicated they can't walk, talk or drive if so there will always be the one sober driver so everyone get homes safely. They like to go out with the boys and drink and hit on girls. They looked of age as because they could order themselves drinks and they could also drive. There where many different cultures in the film there where some Maori people and they are betrayed as a violent out going drinkers which is a stereotype people give them. Everyone should know how to handle there drinking and how much they intake. There always needs to be a sober driver.

In the film it looks as if everyone was drinking because most of them had cans or bottles in their hands. It makes the young adults look irresponsible and all they want to do is drink. Most of them are either Maori or Pacific islander which makes a bad reputation and look on them. There was one female that was shown and the rest where male. They where all of age because they had to buy the drinks and one of them was going to drive home which then lead one of his mates to speak up and to crash at the house for the night.

English

1. Describe at least one way that a character or individual changed in the text.
- The Other Mother
- At the beginning - she was kind, lovely, she is two faced, perfect model of a mum, a bit strange, buttons for eyes (symbols)
- At the end - crazy, strange, violent, malicious, sinister, looks like a witch, no longer looks like a human.

- Physical change that shows the real evil mother - was always evil, but we didn't see it.
- Legs - extend/grows more/metal, Head - pointy, gets skinner, loses all fat then skin,

- Costume - nice and form fitting to rags, warm colours, more dark colours - black/red/white, more beetle like, less human like.

- Colour/Lighting - at the start artificial, warm, orange like - makes us feel welcome/safe, by the end artificial, cold, dark with neon green and purple light - feel dangerous/horror

1. Physical
2. Colour/Lighting
3.Costume

2. Explain how this change was important to the text as a whole.
- Shows the theme - 'looks can be deceiving'
- Made the story scarier to see her change over time, more intense, draws the viewer in.

Thesis Statement - My argument

In Henry Selicks film 'Coraline', one character whose change was important to the story was the other mother. We first encounter her as a kind perfect mother, but by the end we see her true nature as an evil soul stealing demon. This shows us the theme of looks can be deceiving. This essay will discus how physical, Lighting and costume are used to show the change of the other mother.

The Other Mother, a character in Henry Selicks film 'Coraline', changes from a nice caring mother to a soul stealing demon spider.

'Looks can be deceiving' is an important theme in Henry Selicks film 'Coraline'. It is best shown through the changes of the character, 'The Other Mother'.

Gymnastic Term 3

The last few weeks we have been focused on gymnastics in P.E.

The skills that I already had when I started were forward roll, backwards roll, cartwheel, bridge, back bend.

I have improved at doing nothing.

I would like to learn to do something other than gymnastics.

Coraline - How is colour used to create the two worlds

How is colour used to create the two worlds.

Real world - Study

- Dark, grey, blues, greens
- Natural light

Feels
- Sad, lonely, depressed
- Miserable
- Dusty, dirty, old, crowded

Director
- Gives us a sense about how Coraline feels
- Bored, sad
-Shows the dad is exhausted and over worked.

Other world - Study

Colours
- Artificial orange, red
- Greys
- Warm, artificial light

Feels
- Happy, bright, excited, relaxed, clean, tidy, spacious

Director
- Makes it look like the sort of place Coraline wants ti live
-Shows the other father is active and awake
-This father has time to talk to her

Paragraph

Colour is important in creating the two worlds and showing the theme "looks can be deceiving". This is shown when comparing the study's in the real and other world. The real world study is dull. dowdy and cold with a grey and blue colour palette. This makes the audience feel like the space is miserable and unpleasant to be in. The director did this to show that Coraline is upset that her father is too busy to spend time with her. Juxtaposed to this is the study in the other world. Artificial oranges and reds makes the other study feel warm, welcoming and enticing. Selcik does this to show the audience that this is the kind of world Coraline likes to live in. Colour is used to make the other world feel like a safe place but it is actually a trap to live in Coraline and steal her soul.

How does lighting enhance the story.

How does lighting enhance the story.

Real world kitchen
- Dark,dull,dowdy
- Lighting from outside - cloudy/rainy/grey
- Makes house look old/moldy/cold
- would smell musty

Cold light
- bright white
- sometimes blue
- makes the room feel cold

Warm light
- often yellow/orange
-make the room feel warm and welcoming

Other world kitchen
- Bright - warm light, welcoming
- Artificial lights - bulb over the table

Feels
- Sad,bored,lonely and cold
- Makes a clear comparison/contrast between the world
- Not everything in the real world is perfect
- Shows us Coraline isn't happy

Feels 2
- Feels warm, welcoming, happy, safe
- Makes the world seem perfect
- It is where Coraline wants to be
- The other world is the perfect web/trap to catch Coraline

When comparing the real world and the other world kitchens, lighting is used effectively to enhance the story. The real world kitchen uses a natural cold light coming through the window to make the space feel cold, bored and unhappy. The director did this to show the audience that Coraline isn't happy. In comparison, the other world kitchen has an artificial warm orange light that creates a welcoming, happy and safe atmosphere. Selick used this technique to show that Coraline is happy in this perfect world. It ks the perfect trap to capture Coraline. This can be compared to later in the film when Coraline realises the other mother is evil. From this point the lighting in the other world becomes duller like the real world to show Coraline doesn't want to stay there anymore.

Film study - Coraline plotting

What am I learning - I am learning to analyse the plot from Coraline.
How does this work show my learning - It's a creative way to show my work.
What am I wondering as a result of this learning -How long does it usually take to film and make the plot story line.
